As part of our 40th anniversary celebration, Steve Friedman of Melville Park Studios has generously offered to record a CD for the Folk Song Society. Previous Folk Letter articles have described the project as it has evolved over the past few months, and as of October 1st we had a list of approximately 25 members (or groups of members) who were interested in being recorded for the CD.
In preparation for the selection and recording process, we are putting on a concert featuring these performers. The concert will be recorded by Steve Friedman so that the CD selection committee can use the recordings in the final selection process, and in the hope that some of the recordings can be used on the actual CD. Some songs will involve audience participation, so come prepared to sing!
As of this writing, the following performers had signed up to perform: Paul Beck, Izzy Doveburd, Donald Duncan, Peter Hamlin, Mike Holmes, Mark Katz, Cate Levin, Thomasina Levy, Suzanne Mrozak, Nancy Mulrey, Michael O’Leary, Judy Predmore, Merle Roesler, Kate Seeger & Dean Spencer, the Simones (Lori Fassman, Chris Felknor, Kathryn Kaufman and Jeanne Wildman) and the Midweek Singers.
The other Society members who have expressed interest in being on the CD were either unavailable for the concert or their participation was unconfirmed as of this writing.
The concert (and the CD!) will present traditional music from the public domain (i.e., songs that were in circulation prior to 1925.) This includes ballads, instrumentals, some foreign language pieces, and more! Please join us to help kick off this project with a bang!
