Copper Family (House Concert)

Thursday, July 11, 2002, 8pm
in Waltham, MA
Admission: $10 for all

The Copper Family has been called the folk tradition in reality. Over two hundred and fifty years of the singing heritage of England is distilled into these friendly folks, who are able to trace their roots back in Rottingdean, Sussex, to the late 1500s. This quartet, consisting of patriarch Bob, son John, daughter Jill, and Jill s husband Jon Dudley, is only the latest in a continuous chorus of songsters. Back when America was fighting for independence, Coppers were singing. They were still doing it during the American Civil War, and on and on.

They have never sung professionally, but are, as Bob (now 87 and still in good voice) is fond of pointing out, "taproom singers", meaning that you will find them at their best in a pub or a bar with a couple of pints inside them. What makes the Copper family so special and so marvelous isn t the fact that they re folksingers. It’s the songs. The family itself is the vehicle for this wonderful long tradition of singing for its own sake. As John points out, they re a "living museum piece".

This concert with the premier folk family of England promises to be a memorable one, and we know it will prove that folk music is very much alive and thriving. Hope you ll be able to join us for this great singing session!
