The Folk Song Society of Greater Boston is pleased to present a concert by one of the finest singer songwriters of our times, Pat Humphries. When Pat Humphries stands up to sing, her voice, a vibrant, gutsy alto, has the power and conviction to hush an audience. Yet, there's an inclusive feeling to her performance that inspires people not only to sing along and harmonize, but to recognize the spirit of community created by the music as well. Her moving songs and beautiful melodies address a range of social issues: peace, justice, lesbian, gay and homosexual rights, environmental awareness, women's issues, and the rights of working people.
Pat Humphries is well known as a songwriter, and her songs have been covered by such well-known artists as Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Lui Collins, Charlie King, Judy Small and Magpie. Even those unfamiliar with her name are singing her much acclaimed anthems, "Never Turning Back" and "Common Thread". Whether filling a room with the richness of an a capella song or accompanying herself on guitar, Pat presents a selection of songs that make you think, feel, laugh, cry and join in.
In 1977, Pat began performing in clubs and coffeehouses in Cleveland, where she played folk, contradance, bluegrass and old-time music in a variety of bands. She began her solo career when she wrote "Keep On Moving Forward (Never Turning Back)" in 1984. "Keep On Moving Forward" opened the 4th United Nations World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. Nearly 30,000 people sang her song then and it became the theme of the conference, with it's words headlining newspaper articles around the globe. Many thousands sang her songs at the Gay Games III in Vancouver, the Boston-based Pledge of Resistance and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF)
With her repertoire of powerful, singable songs and her enchanting stage presence, Pat Humphries inspires her audience to create a healthier, more conscious world.
