The Folk Song Society of Greater Boston presents a special showcase concert, with local talents Lori Fassman, Will Whiteley with daughters Anna and Catherine, and Peter Fischman and Deb O'Hanlon.

Lori Fassman

Lori Fassman, best known to members of the Folk Song Society as the editor of the Folk Letter, has been singing semi-professionally since moving to the Boston area in 1988. Lori has been involved in numerous local folk and a cappella performing groups including Deadline Poet, a six-woman a cappella group which has performed at local venues such as Club Passim and Johnny D's and recorded a cut on the third annual Acoustic Alliance compilation CD.

Lori plays piano and guitar, but performs primarily a cappella. Her repertoire consists mainly of contemporary songs, but also features some traditional songs and sing-alongs, many of which were learned at Folk Song Society midweek sings and monthly singing parties. These days she performs mostly with the The Simones (a folk quartet with fellow Society members Chris Felknor on guitar, Jeanne Wildman on violin and viola, and Kathryn Kaufman on autoharp, harmonica, and melodica), who will be joining her for this concert.

A computer programmer by day, Lori also serves on the Folk Song Society's board of directors as Recording Secretary, and has been involved in other local folk music organizations such as the Nameless Coffeehouse and the New England Folk Festival Association.

Will Whiteley

Will Whiteley, a long-time member of FSSGB, will be joined in this concert by his daughters Anna and Catherine. The Whiteley family has been making music together for about 20 years, entertaining audiences with three-part harmonies and multi-cultural folk music, as well as Will's rambling historical narratives. They recorded a few songs last year, and hope to have a project ready sometime in the next year. Although daughters Catherine, who studies Hindu devotional music, and Anna, who writes her own folk-pop music and has just released a CD ("Boom Bang Thump Meow", Tollie Records, LR-6501, 1997), have gone in different musical directions, they still have time to make music with their father. Their tight blend of harmony, and related vocal chords make them very satisfying to listen to.

Peter Fischman and Deb O'Hanlon

Peter Fischman and Deb O'Hanlon have been singing together and playing in coffeehouses since 1984.... They have one recording ("Fareast Kitchen", Fishpeople Music, 1991, cassette), and dreams of others. They are known for their tight harmonies, engaging humor, and eclectic repertoire. Many of their songs, if not traditional, are of the traditional style. They also include many of Peter's songs, some of which have been described as "the best 100 year old songs every heard", take you to faraway places and speak from the heart and soul. When they aren't doing a song a capella, Peter plays guitar, and sometimes Deb adds mandolin.
