Joan Sprung is a "tradition-bearer," a researcher and singer of songs that document the American past. She approaches her music thoughtfully and with great affection, moving with remarkable ease from native and naturalized ballads to turn-of the century music, each sung with unquestionable authority. In addition, she has earned a reputation as an outstanding writer of songs that have the timeless feel of tradition. Her Harbors of Home, known and loved by many FSSGBers, is a good example!
Joan has appeared widely as a solo concert artist in the US and UK. As a festival performer, she has led and participated in workshops focusing on American songs, hymns, work songs, love and war, songwriting, and ballads.
Joan has two Folk-Legacy albums to her credit: Ballads and Butterflies and Pictures to My Mind. You can also hear her on recordings of other artists as a harmony singer and instrumentalist.
She accompanies her clear, resonant singing voice with guitar or Appalachian dulcimer. Her presence, warmth, and humor have made her a favorite with audiences at many concerts and festivals, and we are delighted to have her in concert for the Folk Song Society. We hope you will join us on April 10th to welcome in the Spring and wish Joan well as she heads off to perform in the UK!
